Little Grey Compact

This compact car was built at the same time as the hovership.

Grey Compact 1

What started it: I am continuing to try to build a convincing microcar. This time, it occurred to me that it might be easier to avoid building it to minifigure scale, and also not build an interior. To build it without an interior meant that I had to build it with non-transparent windows.

What I like about it: This was mostly an experiment, so it’s tough to be too critical of it. There are elements I like about it – the windshield, for example, and the headlights for another – and things I don’t like about it. Overall, I think it was a successful experiment.

Grey Compact 3

What I’m not so fond of: I think this would have been more successful if I had built the body with a brighter color, but I have more grey Lego pieces than any other color. I think I’m getting closer to building a proper tail end of a car, but I don’t like that gap on the sides much.

Hovership

Filed under: Air, Lego, Space — Paul @ 8:26 pm

This is a hovership designed for skimming the surfaces of alien planets.

Hovership 1

How it started: It all began with the pilot’s control booth. I had an idea to build a spaceship around the booth, and have the booth suspended in a bubble-like nose, attached only by two arms in the back of the control booth. I kept building various ship noses, but becoming unsatisfied with the design each time, and tearing the ship down again. The pilot’s control booth sat by itself for several days, until Phillip suggested the I move the arms to the front of the control booth and build a pod racer out of it. I found, as I was building Phillip’s pod racer, that it would continue to be an unstable design unless I joined the two halves of the outer shell in the back. By joining the two halves, it became more of a hovership than a pod racer.

Hovership 2

What I like about it: There are many elements of the design I like a lot. I enjoy the open design of it. I like the look of those outermost rudders. I do wish the back of the pilot’s control booth was a little farther away from the outer shell, so it would have an even more open design, but I like the way this thing turned out.

Hovership 3

What I’m not so fond of: Although I like the shape and colors of this creation, I don’t think it’s very clear what it is.
