Dinosaur Transport

Filed under: Land, Lego — Tags: — Paul @ 10:11 am

Here is a vehicle to move a dinosaur safely, slowly, and comfortably from one location to another. The driver is fully enclosed and protected, just in case a dinosaur becomes agitated. In the rare case of emergency, the drivers’ compartment opens from the back – away from the dinosaur’s teeth.

Dinosaur Wash

Filed under: Lego, Vignette — Tags: — Paul @ 8:55 am

After a busy day, every dinosaur needs to be washed and fed.

Dinosaur Wash

What started it: I’ve been reading about the art of the Lego Vignette, so I decided to try making one myself. A standard vignette is done on an 8×8 base. In order build my dinosaur wash, I had to use a 16×16 base, which officially makes it a “Bignette.” It’s my first attempt, though. I will try to build something truer to the art in the future.

What I like about it: I think it turned out well. I hadn’t thought of the hose when I envisioned this, and it was a last minute addition, but I like it.

What I don’t like so much: I’m not completely satisfied with the spilled water and soap effect, and I wanted to somehow make soap suds on the dinosaur, but I just couldn’t figure that part out.

Dinosaur Power

I like this dinosaur. There are other dinosaurs in my collection of Legos, but this guy is my favorite. After having him observed, and then transported, it seemed like time to put him to work. This vehicle is steered by those two speakers on the side of the cabin. The direction of sounds prompts the dinosaur.

What started it: The dinosaur, obviously. I decided the pins on its back could be useful, so I built a fancy, two person cabin, with storage behind the seats.

What I like about it: Phillip is thrilled with this thing. He says it’s my best creation yet. I don’t agree. I think it’s all right, it’s fun, but it doesn’t quite light my fire. So be it. I like the white half-arches. They really do look like they’re resting on the dinosaur’s shoulders.

What I don’t like about it: This thing is extremely fragile! I accidentally kicked it over as I was getting ready for work. The cabin detached from the dinosaur, and one of the red lights came off. As I pressed it back together, one of the white half-arches came off, and one of the minifigures came detached. Every time I’d put something back on, something else would pop off, and I had practically rebuild the entire thing.

Walking With The Dinosaurs

Filed under: Land, Lego — Tags: — Paul @ 8:57 pm

This is some sort of one-person, open air, walking vehicle. It has legs instead of wheels, to not scare the dinosaurs too much. The driver sits up high, to observe nature better, and also to protect the driver from frightened dinosaurs.

Walker 1

What started it: Previously, I had downloaded instructions for a Star Wars AT-ST. As I built it, I discovered that I didn’t have all the necessary part, and I had to improvise quite a bit. The legs turned out to be rather flimsy, and I had to pose the thing just right in order to keep it from either toppling over or collapsing under its own weight. So, after discovering that I could actually build something without relying on instructions, I set out to build a mechanical walker with stronger legs. Also, I wanted to design something without as many parts to it as that undersea craft.

Walker 2

What I like about it: I like the scale of the thing. I also like the color balance of it. The colors don’t seem as haphazard as the undersea craft before it. Those pieces that make up the foot “pads” are among my favorite Lego pieces. They’re versatile.

What I’m not so fond of: Although this isn’t among my favorite creations, there isn’t much I don’t like about it. Those backward knee joints are kind of funky, and I’m not sure how they’d work in real life, but I like the funkiness. I think the hoses leading from the engine to the feet are too heavy-looking, but I didn’t have anything thinner.
